Are you wondering if Dental Implants are right for you? When someone is missing one or multiple teeth, having them replaced is imperative for a person's overall health. Not only can having missing teeth affect the gums and surrounding teeth in a patients mouth but over time it can even change the persons outward appearance although people may not realize it until it is too late.
When a tooth is missing, the tooth root is also gone. The root is typically attached to the jawbone and the stimulation from day to day activities like talking and eating stimulate the jawbone to keep it healthy. Not having this stimulation will cause the bone to begin deteriorating and cause a persons outward appearance to change over time. The cheeks can start sinking in and drooping making a person look much older than they are.
Are dental implants right for you?
One thing that can make dental implants a good option for patients is the fact that they can be used to not only replace a missing tooth but multiple teeth wherever they are located in the mouth. Whether they are found together or in different areas of the mouth, the implants can be inserted, and a person will feel like they have their natural teeth back!
An aspect that most patients are thrilled about is that they look and feel just like natural teeth. Brushing and flossing are done just the same, and there is no shifting or moving of the teeth like can be experienced with dentures and other teeth replacement options.
A healthy jawbone is needed
When a person is a candidate for dental implants, the dentist and dental specialist will inspect and ensure that the jawbone is strong enough for implants. This is one aspect that is vital to know the implants will be correctly inserted and not experience any issues after the implant procedure.
However, for patients that have a jawbone that is not strong enough to hold dental implants, there are options! By having bone grafting completed on the jawbone, it can make it possible for the patient to still get dental implants.
Bone grafting is done to help and build up the jawbone to make it strong enough to hold the implants. This can typically be completed by only using local anesthesia, although stronger sedation can be used if a person prefers to be completely sedated during the procedure.
A very tiny incision is typically made, and the bone graft is placed on the jawbone. After this is completed the bone will need some time to heal, and they can be ready for dental implants.
